Nicole, Jane and Jerry

“Tell me what you know Jerry.”

“I don’t know much.”

“How can you be so calm and peaceful all the time?”

“Nicole, we have a very limited time left to live. Don’t you think we are losing those precious  ticking seconds from our lives as we sit and be burdened?”

“Yeah, you’re right”

“You have to relax and not burden yourself much, things will be much simpler. There are 3 types of people- the rich, the poor, and there is us- somewhere in between. But the problem is, the rich will be unhappy as they will never be the richest, the poor will be unhappy because they will never be rich, and us, who are somewhere in between, will never be happy as we will fail miserably making everyone happy.”

“What do you mean?”

“This world is a very unfair place to live in, especially for the humans. Their evolved brain gave them the ability to think, plan and execute their ideas to make dreams into reality. But they also used their ability for being selfish and narrow minded.”

“Yeah, that’s right. We are the ones who can’t coexist, we are the ones cursing and blaming each other, we are spreading like wild fire on this planet, and we are the only ones burdened with the problems created by us. I don’t think it’s the same for the other species.”

“Yes. So the best way to have a good life is by not getting disappointed if we fail in our responsibilities. Do what makes you happy and do what you feel is right as that is the key for a peaceful life. If you try to keep everyone happy, that will be another epic failure, because it’s just not possible. It’s not a bad thing to be poor. And it’s certainly not the best thing to be rich. The rich can’t buy health and peace of mind; all they can buy are commodities which will only give them temporary happiness. So once the commodities get exhausted then what? They will feel the pinch.”

“Sometimes I just feel good to be on my own without anyone bothering me. Maybe take a walk, spend some days alone travelling, you know?” Nicole turned her head towards him, there was a sign of happiness on her face.

“Right, that is because you are enjoying yourself- when there is nobody along with you, you don’t have to worry about making them happy. You can do what you feel like, and doing what you feel like doing makes you happy.”

“Absolutely true Jerry” Nicole pulled out the cigarette case out of her jacket pocket and flipped a cigarette in her mouth. “Do you want one, Jerry?”

“Go ahead, I don’t smoke.”

“Ah, right, not good for your health huh?”

“That’s not the reason Nicole, it’s because I don’t quite enjoy smoking. I am not really bothered if it kills me or not, but If I liked smoking I would just smoke and not be worried about dying. You know why?”

“Because we have all bought a one way ticket to death?” Nicole answered.

“Yes. And if you worry about dying then how will you ever enjoy while you are still alive. Think.” Jerry looked away into the horizon. “You know Nicole, I was in a relationship once. It was more like she was in love with me as I never quite understood what love meant until the day she died.”

“Oh my god, I am sorry about your loss”

“Don’t be. She taught me a lot. She was the most selfless person I ever met. She didn’t worry about herself at all and that’s the reason why she departed so young.”

“What was her name?”

“Jane. She was a spark in the midst of pitch black darkness. She lifted everyone up along her way as much as she could. She didn’t have a perfect home, her parents died when she and her brother both were very young. Her brother was not that lucky in life as he was born with deformed limbs. She used to take care of  him and all the other chores at home. She would take away the pain of everybody like sucking the pain out like a magnet. And that killed her.”

“Oh my God!”

“That was the reason why she died. She was working as a nurse at the hospital outside town, where all she would do was heal people, suck their pain out and make them better. And she found me there in the hospital when I got sick. I’d almost died, but she took care of me. I didn’t know why she loved me so much. She said I made her feel special. I never quite understood how I made her happy, because we never had sex even once.” Jerry joked to ease out the tension.

“Not once?” she curled up the cigarette butt and looked in disbelief at Jerry.

“It was more spiritual. She was the one who took me in refuge when the storm hit my life. I was a wreck. They chucked me out of the army when I got sick, no medical attention, no compensation…nothing. They just let me die as if I was useless. I was broken, but Jane put me back together. She loved me and got me better. Then one day sickness took her. It had to be that way! She never took care of herself and she never ate much but gave away most of her food to the orphanage. She never had money for getting treated at the hospital and she kept her sickness a secret until I found out. But it was too late by then.” Jerry’s face was stern but a drop of tear rolled down his cheek, but he didn’t flinch.

“I am sorry that she had to die so young.”

“Don’t be sorry Nicole. I think it’s best for her. She lived a happy life and did what pleased her the most and departed a happy soul. She never complained, because she was genuinely happy. And that is probably the answer to your question.”

Nicole ruffled his hair and wiped away his tear and they hugged.

The glory ride to Nothingness.

I was in primary school when I used to notice fellow students wearing fancy watches, boasting about their video games, wearing expensive sports shoes, flaunting expensive pens and fancy pencil boxes. But I never asked my father to buy me any of those- I was a non-demanding low maintenance obedient child. But I secretly kept a bucket list. For me luxury would be a hand held video game, or a terminator printed steel pencil box with a middle tray, etc. But as I put on some years behind me, the bucket list went through a lot of iterations. New things got added and I outgrew some old things that I had wanted before. Some desires were fulfilled with a lot of persuasion and perseverance but many never saw the light of day. But now I sometimes crave for those long lost bucket list. I want to get all the things I ever wanted and keep them as souvenirs.

I believe all of us are built like that. We have an insatiable hunger for more. We once needed a car, now we need a bigger and more expensive car. Once we needed a flat, now we need a bigger flat with expensive furniture, classy decor, air conditioning etc. Once we needed a mobile phone to talk, now we desire a mobile phone with a giant ass RAM and storage space twice the size of our once feature rich desktops.

If a person upgrades to a better and bigger commodity, it is least likely that he will ever switch back to the old and inexpensive alternative. Having or owning something is only a continuous growing addiction.
I did not own a smart phone 2 years back. It's not too long ago and by then smart phones had already captured the nation’s attention, and more than 90% of my peers owned one. I, on the other hand, had a very limited use of a mobile phone and thought I would refrain myself from getting caught in this frenzy. But, boom! I just changed my mind and bought myself an iPhone. I don't think I will ever be able to switch back to an ordinary phone now anymore, maybe a less expensive phone but never a phone with less functionality.

We are being sucked into a black hole and there is no hope of ever coming back out. We have let gone our social characteristics. We spend more lonesome times now than ever. We have even stopped socializing with our most immediate family members. We have the least amount of knowledge now than ever even though access to information is literally on our fingertips. We are slaves to this created need. ‘Created need’ means a need which is not inherently there but is being created to make life simpler and better. We never had a television, but we had a very productive life. We never had internet, but life never slowed us down. We never had video games, but kids always found something to amuse themselves with and have a good time.

By that I do not shun the idea of owing video games, or a TV, or internet. Yes, we have to keep up with the pace of evolving technology, but we also have to make sure that WE own these technologies and not the other way round. How the human race has evolved has a lot to do with how they have used and applied their brains in situations in life. Being the most advanced species on the planet, the humans are becoming smarter day and day but in the process they are also becoming even more lazy, more and more indifferent, more and more dependent. Basically, they are being sucked into a black hole, and they are taking everything along with them in their journey to glory.

Another City...

I want to run again like a little boy
Run and run with the wind
I want to look up at the bluest skies
Where amongst the clouds flutters my little kite
I want to watch the birds on the roof
Sitting together as if for a feast
I want to play all the games that we used to play
Oh it’s all rushing back to me
Now I wake up all alone
With no one there to care for me
I have a boring 9-6 like most of us
Oh god why are you punishing me...

As a little boy

It just wouldn’t happen. Father tried everything possible to lure me out of my hiding place, from under the bed. It was becoming a daily affair and I would cry and throw tantrums to stop them from sending me to school. It worked for me! Father would some days just let me be and take my elder brother to school on his old Bajaj Chetak.

Mother would carry me out of the bed and hold me up and brush my teeth. Then she would get me all dressed up while I stood in half stupor. The uniform was a red and white check shirt, bright red shorts and a little red tie. She would comb my hair and drag me to the breakfast table and help me with some cereal, milk and bread. And then when it would be time to leave for school, I would run and hide.

I had learnt the art of blackmailing form that time onwards when I would make my mother take me to school and wait for me the entire time. And she would sit outside the school building and wait. And then when school would get over and I would come out of the huge wooden gates, my eyes would search for the glimpse of my mother. For me that would be both a prize and a sigh of relief.

Now when I reflect on those days I feel how stupid, insensitive and insecure I was.

Water Falls

En route to Cherrapunji- the wettest place on earth!

Occasional herds of cattle were spotted on the road. This was a lazy group of cows jaywalking in the perfect weather conditions. The calm postures of these animals made me contemplate about my life, and the road ahead...

The roads towards Cherrapunji from Shillong are the best mountain roads I have traveled in India so far. I felt I was in Nappa Valley! I secretly wished to drive the car on these beautiful roads. The place is not called Scotland of the East for nothing!

A bit of grey, blue and green and a hint of red and brown...makes for a perfect picture with Mom and Dad. :)

Towards Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

Sight Seeing, Shillong

These are the evergreen pine trees. This photograph was taken at the Shillong peak region. Pine trees are found extensively in the mountainous regions of the northern hemisphere, there are about 115 types of this species throughout the world. Pine trees are gymnosperms and hence do not bear flowers, rather they have the male and female cones. The male cones, situated at the lower branches of the tree, are thinner and smaller and release massive amounts of very fine wind borne pollen which find the much larger female cones situated at the upper branches of the tree. The cones are visually very appealing and are often found lying at the base of the trees. People pick them up and take them home as souvenirs!Don Bosco Church. The biggest and best known church of Shillong. It is a beautiful building and has a very peaceful setting with loads of open spaces and a nice stairway up to the church.
A common dog resting peacefully in the shade off a wall. These dogs bear resemblance to wolves and have a thick coat of fur...
Mom enjoying a hot cup of tea at the Shillong Peak area. A conical wicker can be seen on the right, placed on a tripod, which is  being used as a dustbin. These wickers are made out of bamboo and are used for various purposes. People even use to carry wood, rock, vegetable etc.

This photograph is also taken on the premises of the Shillong Peak. The pine forest on one side and the beautiful road straight ahead with a commoner approaching towards the camera, completes the picture.

Our Hotel- Shillong

Our hotel, Blue Pine, was uniquely shaped in the form of a triangle. It was a very nicely done room with wooden walls and a nice and cozy bed. The feel of the room was very European with those big windows, framed pictures of fruits, wooden finish from ceiling to the floor, the soft lighting etc. Though the service was a problem as there were hardly and house-keeping staff available and we had to travel about 200 meters to another hotel. Itotally loved this tiny triangular room :)

With Mom and Dad. Took this photograph on the self timer with flash. The pic turned out to be pretty good.

Shillong Peak

This is a wonderful place located at the highest point in Shillong. The place is called Shillong Peak and is situated very close to the Air Force area. This is the best place to see the entire Shillong city in a beautiful panoramic view. I have taken a few photographs of the place and also had mom and dad pose for the camera :)
Here Dad is seen wearing a beret which I bought from a nice boutique store in the city- near Police Bazaar.

A Panoramic view of Shillong City from the highest point- Shillong Peak

This is one of my favourite panoramic shots taken off Shillong Peak. The shot covers an angle of approximately 270 degrees. If you look closely you might be able to spot the golf course, the main city, and the city's most important market- Police bazaar...

Golf Course- Shillong, Meghalaya

Meghalaya, literal translation: 'The Abode of Clouds' is one of the most picturesque states of India. This state was previously a part of Assam, but in 1972 it was made into a separate state with Shillong as the capital city. Incidentally Shillong was the capital of Assam till 1972 and after the state was broken up, Guwahati was made the capital of Assam. This photograph was taken at the golf course of Shillong, a very beautiful and picturesque place indeed- you can't probably look more photogenic when you have a backdrop such as this!

Pine trees in the backdrop...mom collected a lot of cones that had fallen off from these trees.

Nongpoh- a small village situated between Shillong and Guwahati

This small village, Nongpoh is where the drivers take a break while going towards either Guwahati or Shillong. It is about 36-40kms from Guwahati. This town is very strategically situated between two big cities. The roads are mostly very clean, but when we went there the roads were being widened and there was dust and sand everywhere, and there were so many trucks on the road. It took us almost five and a half hours to travel 125kms to reach Shillong.

Zoological & Botanical Gardens- Guwahati, Assam

This was one of the best Zoos I have ever seen in my life, very naturally situated for all these wild animals. We got to see tigers, lions, rhinos, giraffes, deer, birds, langoors, hippos...etc, in their natural habitat. Coming from Calcutta, i was always proud to proclaim that we had the biggest zoological gardens in India, but this little zoo in Guwahati completely shattered my pride in terms of the quality of the natural wildlife at show!

Cityscape- Guwahati, Assam

This photograph was taken from top of the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati. It was a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city from up here. This is probably the first of the many panoramic shots I have taken in the trip. Beautiful place, if you look closely you will find a long serpentine train in the picture.

Guwahati, Assam

Our driver and guide in Guwahati. He was a great guy with a lot of patience, never complaining even once for the long waits while we made our visits to the local sites. He accompanied us to the local zoological gardens which was the best one in India i have seen so far!

Kamakhya Temple- Gwahati, Assam

One of those poor lambs on the premises of the temple for the sacrificing. Beautiful creatures!
